Very important! New pre-registration for entry into the USA
Keep in mind that all non-US citizens visiting the USA from Visa Waiver countries (Australia is one) now need to pre-register details electronically prior to checking in for the entry flight into the US. Known as 'ESTA' it sounds complicated but we can complete this process for you.

Now that we travel in a virtual e-ticket environment, please be vigilant in some countries where the airport check-in staff can or will deny knowledge of your e-ticket being issued. Some check in staff could be on a sales incentive, some check-in staff will demand that you purchase a new ticket. Always carry a copy of your eticket receipt with you. This is the only proof that will be acceptable.

Tall Story

Dueling Drinks - who named the 'Bloody Mary'?

The Ritz Paris lays claim to the Bloody Mary: Legend has it that Hemingway complained his wife, Mary, had tired of his drinking and could always smell it on his breath. The bartender mixed him an odourless cocktail of vodka and tomato juice; the next day Hemmingway returned and exclaimed, "Bravo, bloody Mary didn't smell anything!"

The King Cole Bar in the St. Regis Hotel, New York disputes the legend. The story goes that Fernand Petiot, who invented the drink - originally just equal parts vodka and tomato juice - at Harry's New York Bar in Paris, bought it to the NYC landmark and perfected the classic recipe known today.

Patrons at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria devised discerning ways to conceal their liquor during the days of Prohibition: Winston Churchill drank his brandy from a teapot.

First in Class

London's first official hotel was Browns, opened in 1837, Alexander Graham Bell made the country's first telephone call from there in 1876.

Opened in 1910 in London, The Goring was the world's first hotel to offer central heating in every guest room.

First hotel to include electricity on every floor (and telephones in all guest rooms): the Ritz Paris in 1898.

New York City's Waldorf-Astoria was the first hotel to offer 24-hour room service in the U.S. When opened in 1931, the 42-story art deco landmark was also the world's tallest hotel at the time.

Fighting Jetlag

The never ending saga of overcoming jet lag. Some long distance travellers always advise to keep flying west, never drink alcohol while flying, eat lightly etc.

It all comes back to when your circadian rhythms go out of kilter. Melatonin, a naturally produced hormone, becomes confuses the body about when you should be asleep!

jetlag_glasses

So scientists are working on ideas such as LED glasses which emit a blue light into the pupils of the wearer. Research has found that when exposed to blue light emitting diodes (LED), bodies can more efficiently regulate the effects of abnormal working hours or time zones. Melatonin also helps travellers re-program circadian rhythms.

Airlines change the colour of the cabin lighting to mood with the evening and daylight hours, or the crew make you pull down the window shutter and just turn off all the lights.

The experienced traveller's answer is timed and careful use of a sleeping pill (after take off) on the longhaul sector and on the first night before bed at your final destination.
